Gretchen Wilson Sets Great Example with GED

In a nation where education is taking on more and more significance when it comes to the changing job market and high cost of living, country singer Gretchen Wilson is setting an great example by seeking out high school graduation at the age of 34.

She took her General Educational Development (GED) exam in April and on May 15 she will participate in a graduation ceremony

Wilson dropped out of high school in ninth grade and went on to join the ranks of the 20 percent of Tennesseans who have not finished high school. Despite that, her very first single, “Redneck Woman,” went to the number one spot of the music charts and earned a Grammy Award. Many would say she has achieved success.

Wilson attributes her desire to obtain her GED to her 7-year-old daughter. She says she wants to be a good example. And, I commend her. I imagine that now that she is a celebrity, and in the daily spotlight, it was not an easy thing for her pride to step back and get her GED. Nonetheless, she has set an inspiring example not only for her daughter, for many other people as well.

Our society needs more examples like this in the area of education. Thetruth that success is not often gained without education is what Wilson represents. She is an exception to the rule and by backtracking and finishing an educational milestone, she is  acknowledging that.
