When I’m Right, I’m Right
I love it when I read a national news story that backs up an opinion I have previously written about.
I have been saying for sometime now that smaller and niche social networking sites are the best places to interact online. YouTube and FaceBook are just massive communities where you get lost in the crowd. I prefer smaller networks, or sites that have been specifically designed with a niche interest in mind. In fact, I just wrote the article “Do You Feel Lost on MySpace?” yesterday, where I touted the new, small #GB community. I have come across social networking sites for horse lovers, pet owners, singles, photographers, and hundreds of other topics.
Today I was browsing the CNN headlines and I saw an article with the headline “MySpace, Facebook: Big not always better”.
That’s what I’m talking about, I though…though I actually probably said it out loud. I tend to do that.
Basically the Associated Press article says that gargantuan social networking sites like MySpace and FaceBook are losing people to more intimate, specialized for athletes, readers, hobbyists and other niche groups. Of course, they’re losing people. The larger networking sites tend to overloaded with young people who are primarily interested in dating. When I have tried to find like-minded book lovers on MySpace, I only end up with a lot of people who want to send me dirty messages. I want to talk about the latest book I read, not my favorite sexual position.
So, yay for the little niche sites. May you bode well.
