Florida, the land of retirees
I know that the elderly populations higher than in most states. It does not bother me much at all. I know a lot of people complain about all of the older folks around here, but I rather like living amongst them. Florida can be a very unfriendly state. Unless you live in North Florida, there is not much of “the south” around here and the transplants from states like New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts tends to add a hard edge to the public interactions. Sometimes I find that the retired people who live near me tend to soften those hard edges.
OK, so we definitely have a problem with traffic and accidents with so many elderly drivers on the road. I do happen to support the idea that after a particular age, all drivers should be tested annually for reflexes and vision. Other than that, I have no problem using a little more diligence on the roads.
There is a lot of focus on healthcare here in Florida. I suppose that is also because we have such a large population of retired people. Many people use Medicare and find out the hard way that it does not always cover all of your medical expenses. I have become quite the expert about supplemental policies, medicare advantage, because I have worked long and hard with my mother to make sure she is fully covered.
