Life on Florida’s West Coast

Cool Site: RC Cars Tips and Tricks

I have a daughter turning five this month. My nephew is halfway into his sixth year of life. You can imagine that I am up to my elbows in all of the toys of today’s culture, most of them being electronic, requiring batteries, or somehow involving a computer. I don’t mind a bit, either. I am just as fascinated as the kids.

The whole family started buying remote control cars and planes for my nephew as soon as he was born. He has amassed quite an impressive collection. He does not come to our house as often as we go there, quite simply because my daughter is obsessed with her cousin’s RC car collection. He is a patient tutor, too, so my daughter knows more than I ever did about the ins and outs of this hobby.

A lot of people, especially adults, take the RC Car hobby very seriously. I found an entire blog dedicated to RC car tips and tricks and the whole thing is written in laymen’s terms, which is a good thing for me, because I am not as naturally inclined to dreaming up adequate fixes for the issues we often encounter.

I love the articles. There are often pictures, the tips are easy to comprehend and follow, and the tricks are sometimes clever to the point of making me say AHA out loud. Take this article on using first-aid-gauze as a pre-filter or this one about using a paperclip as a drive pin. Good, solid nuggets of info. It functions as a great introduction to RC cars for beginners

If you are a RC enthusiast, you really should check out this blog.

104th annual Florida State Fair

The state fair in Florida starts tomorrow, February 7 and runs through February 18. Lucky for me, our state fairgrounds are right across the Bay in Tampa. 4800 Highway 301 North, to be exact.

This year there will be a Las Vegas Review, Country Gold Tour, WWE stars of tomorrow, and Elvis Impersonator Extravaganza, and Roller Derby, a live prayer gospel tend, a big bear show, alligator wrestling, and much more. There are food and animal exhibits, dance competitions, as well as arts & crafts.

The gates open daily at 9 a.m. and I know some of the local school districts even give a day off to attend the fair on Student Days.

A World of Free Information

One of the endlessly cool things about the internet is the sheer volume of free information available on nearly any topic you can imagine. Granted, not all of the information comes from a reputable source, but that is generally easy enough to verify.

Pick a topic, any topic. Give me a difficult challenge and I guarantee I can find good information for you on the net, for free. I have been particularly enlightened when it comes to topics of health and finance. Those were areas where I did not have a whole lot of natural knowledge and I am thrilled at how easy it has been to brush up on everything from my daughter’s vaccinations to how to roll over a retirement account.

When we bought our last house, the one that is getting ready to go back on the market now, I had more time to be picky about mortgages. So, I spent time reading articles and forums. I sought out advice from professionals and mined for gems of advice on bank and lending sites. I became a powerhouse of knowledge. Sites that offer a library or free articles, like MoneyMagic, are particularly helpful.
