November Roses

I’ve got roses that are really beginning to find their footing now that it is November. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 100 times – I love having a year-round growing season in Florida.
I planted a couple of rose bushes outside the kitchen window, next to the birdbath. They are just going to town out there, blooming all over the place. I usually leave the flowers out there to add beauty to the yard, but I cut one off this evening to enjoy inside. Something about having it next to a Thanksgiving table ornament feels ironic to me.
I also have a Peace Rose out on the front porch, ready to be put in the ground. Maybe I can do that tomorrow.
That’s a beautiful rose. My grandmother would have loved it. We have our Rose Festival in June, (I’m from the City of Roses), although the rose bushes have several blooms throughout summer and early fall. But it is unusual to see a Rose with a pumpkin ornament!
Is the Peace Rose fragrant? When I lift a beautiful rose to my nose and discover no fragrance, I’m disappointed. But there are Rose societies which cultivate many variety of roses and one person told me that the best roses don’t have a scent, and that a novice cultivator soon “gets over” the desire for a fragrant flower in favor of more highly valued attributes. For me, I prefer to stay an amateur gardner when it comes to the esteemed flower, I still love a fragrant rose garden.
