Life on Florida’s West Coast

The Entertainment Options For a Parent

It wasn’t so long ago that my choice of a good concert was to go see the Ramones at the now gone Hammerjacks in Baltimore or maybe a local punk band at a smoky DC dive. My nights were late and my mornings even later.

I’m a mother to a pre-schooler now, though. My concert days the way I knew them are long gone, at least for the next several years. As a single parent, I am with my daughter alone a lot. She is my date to the movies and concerts and festivals. Therefore, most of my entertainment needs to be quite kid friendly.

Our next big concert plan is Sesame Street Live: Elmo Makes Music. It’s coming to Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater and I’m going though the process of getting concert tickets online right now. I am so not a fan of Elmo, but I do appreciate Sesame Street. I am the same age as Sesame Street. I’m pretty sure it started showing the year I was born and I certainly watched it as a child. I can still close my eyes and see some of the old skits and cartoon shorts in my mind. I loved Mr. Hooper. I even got to meet Big Bird once at the PBS station in DC. He gave me one of his feathers.

Gigi has also requested I take her to see Dora and the Princesses on Ice. Let’s play this one by ear, once performance at a time. I have to ease myself into this new entertainment style.

That’s funny. I’ll be going through the same thing soon enough. It used to be going to the 9:30 club to see Hot Hot Heat, now it will be Raffi concerts. (Though Raffi would be SWEET!)

Sesame Street started when I was in kindergarten. It was my first homework assignment.
So, it started around 1969 or so. I remember vividly how much I squealed with delight when the chef would sing, ‘Niiiine creeeaaam piiiiies!’ and would then trip and fall…
“And that’s the song of NINE!”
Elmo’s okay. I have a problem with the annoying voice, but he’s cute. I’m just bummed that Cookie Monster is no longer a real cookie monster.
As an aside, one of my friends is playing Elmo in the bus and truck show…wonder if you’ll be seeing her.
Will check on that for ya.
