Life on Florida’s West Coast

For the Love of Herbs

I love growing herbs in my garden for medicinal and cooking purposes, but ever since I moved to Florida I’ve had a hard time of it. I have an alright time of it if I keep them in pots inside the house, but once they go into the ground it’s all downhill.

I’m absolutely grooving on the memories while reading Skeet’s blog about her garden, complete with beautiful pictures of the herbs. She may find it neglected, but I’m blissing out just looking at the shots. It’s so lush and homey. She’s in Hawaii and expounds about her trouble growing mint. I could have written that rant! I cannot get mint to grow here in Florida like I could up in Virginia. We had it by the armfuls each year and I would brew strong mint tea. Also, each time my mother made a pot of iced tea, she sent either me or my sister out to the garden to pull a handful of mint leaves to brew with the teabags. Heaven in a frosty glass, I tell you. The mint spread like wildfire and we were always giving away pants. Down here it just dries up and get devoured by the bugs.

Sigh. If I close my eyes I can almost see my childhood garden.

When crafting starts making you money

I’m a huge supporter of crafting as a source of income. I do all I can to help crafting moms stay home with their kids longer by giving advice and support when it comes to starting a business selling hair bows and other craft items.  It thrills me to no end to read about things like Kim selling her first cross stitch craft to a local craft store that just opened up in her town. It just takes that first sale to boost your confidence and get you to the next level.

Someone’s out there making all the handmade crafts you see at shows and in small craft and art stores. Why shouldn’t it be you? Get your never up and take a few samples into a framing store or a children’s clothing boutique. Show them your cross stitch or your knitting our your boutique hair bows. Before you know it, you’ll have a large enough clientele to bring in a significant income.

Housekeeping and Details

Since I have 100% control over my blog’s look and feel with my own domain. I’m trying to find snippets of time to come in and edit the format. It’s compelling and I really want to be here doing it. But, I have to keep my focus on the assignments I have due for my two classes tonight. And tomorrow; that’s a big one. I have a lesson plan due for my Integrated Math & Science on the Characteristics of Sound. This particular assignment has to go into my online portfolio that the state will have access to if they so wish. Plus, this is the lesson plan I’ll have to teach to the entire class next month. Pressure pressure.

So, I’ll have to put off the tweaks I want to do to this template ( and I DO think I’ve settled on this particular template) and the massive burst of website promotion I’m itching to do.

Opening up on a new domain

I have a couple of other blogs, but none so far on my own domain. So welcome to Suncoast Scribe. I will focus a lot on things like education, parenting, Florida stuff (naturally), shopping and building a small business.

I own the Girly Things website and will post a lot of information on here to help people who are working toward building a small business to sell hair bows and other accessories. I would love to be able to stay home with my daughter for a year or so more, but circumstances say I have to go back to work. So, if I can help just one mom stay home with her children, it’s all worth it.
