When I was raising my kids, there were no 'family' restrooms. Poor Tristan had to go in the ladies' room with me and he was uncomfortable because he knew he was a boy and wanted to have some independence. I simply told him about all of the kids who ended up missing or molested and he relaxed. It's really a tough one these days. Safety first is what I say. I didn't even let them out of my sight when they got old enough to go by themselves. Overprotective? Perhaps. I don't care; it worked for me.
